What is industry 4.0 and digitalization?

20-01-2021

Industry 4.0 is the digital transformation of manufacturing/production and related industries and value creation processes.

Industry 4.0 and the fourth industrial revolution are used alternately, representing a new stage of industrial value chain organization and control.

Cyber-physical systems form the basis of Industry 4.0 (such as "smart machines"). They use modern control systems, have embedded software systems, and handle Internet addresses, which are connected and processed through IoT (Internet of Things).

In this way, products and production materials are networked and can "communicate" to realize new production methods, value creation and real-time optimization. Cyber-physical systems create the capabilities needed for smart factories. These capabilities are also what we learned from the Industrial Internet of Things, such as remote monitoring or tracking and tracing, to name just two examples.

Industry 4.0 refers to the intelligent networking of industrial machines and processes with the help of information and communication technology

Industry 4.0 is a vision, and it is often used interchangeably with the concept of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Its characteristics are: 1) a higher degree of automation than the third industrial revolution; 2) through the network physical system, with the support of the industrial Internet of things, to achieve the convergence of the physical world and the digital world; 3) from the central industrial control system to Intelligent product definition system of production steps; 4) Closed-loop data model and control system; 4) Product personalization/customization.
